I moved in to my new home, an old farm house near Dumfries, with my family in October 2021. The property has substantial old stone outbuildings and we required a real specialist to make two large customised glass brick windows for the stable buildings. Given thickness and unevenness of the ancient stone walls it was a very tricky project. It proved almost impossible to find anyone who could do such a specialist job until we were lucky enough to have Michael recommended to us. He came round punctually, assessed the job precisely, costed it realistically and modestly, and within a fortnight had ordered the complicated materials required and got to work.
I cannot speak too highly of Michael as a craftsman and professional. He worked meticulously and with huge sensitivity on our project and produced a result which was not merely beautiful but an utter work of art. I have never met such a courteous, careful, and superb workman in my life. I and my wife are now excited about the next project he will be doing for us. In this day and age you will not find another individual with Michael’s imagination and diligence working in the building trade. Michael is not a builder but a superb artisan, completely old school and completely honest.

Mike was recommended to me by a friend for our new build stone house after a fall out with our initial (Federation of Master Builders Approved) builder, who only just managed to get it past the footings stage.
With some trepidation, I employed Mike on a day rate basis, although in hindsight I needn’t have worried as it came in cheaper than the initial builder’s quote. Mike was completely different from the initial builder and quickly took charge of the build, offered useful tips and suggestions, and got the build back on track.
Although it was nearly an hours travel each way Mike was always there first thing in the morning, even in the middle of winter. Mike is a seasoned, very skilled, and reliable builder with extreme attention to detail, and we have ended up with a fantastic high quality, high-value home.
Mike also has an extensive contact list of other reliable tradesmen and suppliers that proved invaluable during the build.
If you want a builder who is cheap and quick Mike is probably not your man – but if you want a top-quality job at a fair price then I would highly recommend him.
Double storey extension, and other works to 150 year old limestone cottage
Michael managed our extension and internal alteration works from start to finish. The property required expertise and knowledge of local materials to ensure our extension and other works would blend sympathetically into the existing building structure, and so as not to look out of place amongst the neighbouring listed properties within this conservation area. The finish achieved, every stone dressed by hand, was second to none. We were kept up to date throughout the build, the site was clean and tidy and our neighbours happy. Michael liaised with the other trades to ensure smooth transition from trade to trade. It’s obvious that Mr Lakey is a proper time served craftsman. The works we’re completed on time and within the budget agreed.
We have been working with Michael for the past 10 years. Operating as our main contractor on a varied range of high end projects; from the construction of two large traditional limestone four bedroom town houses, the complete renovation of two listed town houses and a flat. The ground up construction of a complex of one and two bedroom flats, as well as various ongoing work and renovations to existing properties within our portfolio. Michael has always proved to be efficient, trustworthy and importantly within timescales and budgets. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his services and skills.
Mike led our two-storey extension and new garage project from foundations through to brickwork to roof trusses. We now have a very lovely extension as a result of Mike’s quality workmanship and excellent brickwork. It was a pleasure to work with Mike throughout this project and we are extremely happy with the outcome.
I have known Mike Lakey for over 20 years. He has done various building jobs for me. An excellent genuine worker who has dealt with me fairly, done great jobs, is a good timekeeper, respectful and is knowledgeable in the building field.
I am sad that he is no longer in my part of the country. I am finding it difficult to find another such reliable worker.
